But as with all things in life, the more you know, the better prepared you will be and the less anxious you will feel before and during the procedure. Here you will find some useful information you should know before having your first mammogram.

Don't put it off because mammograms really do save lives.

Mammograms save lives because, ideally, they help diagnose breast cancer in its early stages. Talk to your doctor about whether or not a mammogram is necessary for your age and overall health history. Women with a family history of breast cancer (especially if a mother, sister, or daughter has been diagnosed) or who have dense breast tissue (which can make it harder to find lumps or irregular tissue) are usually recommended to have a mammogram earlier. Talk to your doctor and determine what makes the most sense for you. If you choose not to have a mammogram, don't forget to do your monthly breast self-exams and don't skip your annual gynecological visits, which include a breast exam.

Schedule it the week after your period

It is true that your breasts will be under some pressure in order to get the most complete and accurate image possible. Breasts are most sensitive the week before and during your period. Scheduling it for the week after your period will keep discomfort to a minimum. Also, keep in mind that you should not wear deodorant, lotion, or antiperspirant before a mammogram, as the residue can alter the results of the exam.

Prefer to wear pants or a skirt, rather than a dress

You will need to remove your top for the mammogram. They will give you one of those medical gowns that opens completely on one side, but chances are it will be removed – or mostly removed – when it is time for the mammogram. If you are wearing a dress, you may feel more exposed. A garment that includes a top and bottom – rather than a one-piece – is a better choice.

Yes, it may hurt, but only a little.

In most cases, if a mammogram is scheduled after your period, during your cycle when your breasts are less sensitive, the mammogram is simply uncomfortable. If you experience any swelling or tenderness in your breasts, it may hurt a little, but this is rare unless you are generally sensitive to pain. Severe pain during a mammogram is extremely rare.

Choose a center that performs mammograms on a regular basis

The key to having a mammogram that you feel good about is to schedule it at a center that specializes in mammograms and has experienced technicians. Be honest if you are nervous or scared and let them know that this is your first time having a mammogram. When the technician is aware of your concerns and feelings, he or she will slow down the process and make sure you know what is happening at all times.

Try to return to the same place

If possible, it's a good idea to return to the same radiology center or mammogram screening site because they have immediate access to your previous images and can easily compare them to your current images. If you're going somewhere for the first time, let them know where you've had your mammograms in the past (dates and contact information are helpful), and bring your previous mammograms so they can review and compare those records, if necessary.

Don't panic if they tell you they need additional images.

The technician may tell you that they need to take more or more detailed images, and that’s completely normal. You may have sneezed, coughed, changed positions, or breathed while the image was being taken – all of which can lead to a blurry image that needs to be retaken. Women with large breasts or dense breast tissue may need more images so that the radiologist has multiple images to review, leading to a more accurate, overall assessment.

[69

post-4491","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-69
["GET
