Most often it is the result of pregnancy and a laboring birth, although it can also occur in women who have not given birth. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some women are more prone to developing pelvic organ prolapse than others. Factors that increase the chances include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal delivery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advanced age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic cough or constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family history of pelvic organ prolapse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular weight lifting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>There are different types of prolapse:<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 Cystocele and urethrocele. The former (cystocele) is diagnosed when the bladder protrudes into the anterior wall of the vagina. If the protrusion is caused by the urethra and not the bladder, it is called a urethrocele.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 Rectocele. In this type of prolapse, the rectum prolapses into the posterior vaginal wall and usually causes difficulty in defecation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 Uterine prolapse. Sometimes, the uterus itself prolapses into the floor of the vagina. It can be mild, involving only the cervix, or it can be more severe, where the uterus can be felt or prolapses through the vaginal opening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 Vaginal vault prolapse. After hysterectomy, women may experience what is called vaginal vault prolapse, where the bottom of the vaginal vault prolapses into the lower part of the vagina.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In mild cases, symptoms may include things like: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heaviness or a feeling of pressure in the pelvic area<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain or pressure in the back\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leg fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incontinence\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation or difficulty in bowel movements<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discomfort or pain during penetration<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience any of the above symptoms, schedule an exam with your gynecologist. A regular pelvic exam is the only way to confirm whether you have pelvic organ prolapse. While there are surgical procedures for pelvic organ prolapse \u2013 it is rarely your only option.
