Preeclampsia usually occurs after the 20th week of pregnancy and symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe headache<\/li>\n<li>Nausea &amp; vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Severe swelling in the extremities and face<\/li>\n<li>Vision changes<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty breathing<\/li>\n<li>Feeling anxious<\/li>\n<li>Sudden weight gain beyond normal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preeclampsia also includes high levels of protein in the urine, high blood pressure, and hyperreflexia (the kneecap reflex is heightened). If the condition goes undiagnosed and a woman progresses to eclampsia (also called toxemia), it can cause seizures, convulsions, and coma \u2013 and is the leading cause of maternal and fetal mortality worldwide. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is, therefore, very important to know the risk factors so that you know if you are at risk and to pay the necessary attention to the symptoms mentioned above.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is your first pregnancy.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, preeclampsia occurs more often in the first pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have had preeclampsia in the past<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you had preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy, your gynecologist will be on the lookout. While the majority of preeclampsia occurs in first-time pregnancies, women who have had preeclampsia in the past are more likely to have it again in subsequent pregnancies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obese women are also more likely to have preeclampsia. According to the World Health Organization, 20% to 40% of women whose mothers had preeclampsia will also have it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age over 40 years<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women 40 and older are more prone to preeclampsia, one of the reasons why \u00abadvanced maternal age\u00bb automatically places you in the high-risk pregnancy category.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, being pregnant with twins (triplets, etc.) also increases the risk of preeclampsia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain pre-existing medical conditions can also increase the chances of developing preeclampsia. <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of migraines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rheumatoid arthritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scleroderma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lupus Erythematosus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sickle cell anemia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gestational diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary tract infections<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In closing, it&#039;s important to reiterate that preeclampsia is a rare condition, so there&#039;s no need to panic. However, it&#039;s also important to be aware of both the risk factors and symptoms so that you can alert your gynecologist at the first sign that something might be wrong.
