Some women are at risk because of their current medical conditions and/or lifestyle choices. Other times, it is diagnosed in women who have never had blood sugar problems. In either scenario, gestational diabetes poses a health risk to both mother and baby, which is why healthcare providers work so carefully to prevent it and treat it as soon as it is diagnosed.

Gestational diabetes is usually diagnosed around the 24th week of pregnancy, through a glucose screening test, when the mother's blood sugar levels are consistently higher than they should be. In most cases, women diagnosed with gestational diabetes have never had diabetes before. Although the causes are not fully understood, it is thought that hormones produced in the placenta block the action of the mother's insulin, causing insulin resistance, which makes it difficult for the body to regulate normal blood sugar levels.

When the body is no longer able to produce and use the right amount of insulin to convert glucose into energy, glucose levels begin to rise. This condition is called hyperglycemia. All this extra glucose passes through the bloodstream, into the placenta, through the umbilical cord to the fetus. This can be dangerous for both you and the fetus. . Now, your baby's body is working hard to produce enough insulin through its own pancreas to handle all that excess glucose. Meanwhile, all that extra "energy" isn't being used, so it starts to accumulate as fat tissue. This can lead to a condition called macrosomia, or a "fat" baby.

Risks for developing gestational diabetes include:

Pregnant woman age 25 and older.
