The foods you eat affect your breast milk, and your baby can express their preferences through their gut health and overall well-being. If you notice that your baby is a little fussier than usual, you might want to think about what you've been eating recently.

Foods to avoid while breastfeeding

Here are some of the foods and drinks you should avoid while breastfeeding:

Alcohol

While breastfeeding mothers can drink alcohol, be aware that some alcohol will be present in your breast milk once it reaches your bloodstream. Experts agree that breastfeeding mothers should limit their alcohol intake as much as possible. It is also recommended that mothers wait 2 hours after consuming an alcoholic beverage to feed their baby. Excessive alcohol consumption can have a negative impact on your baby's development and sleep schedule.

Caffeine

Caffeine should be consumed in moderation. Caffeine passes into breast milk, and since a baby's body can metabolize caffeine well, it can act as a stimulant and cause irritability and sleep problems. Consider drinking a cup right after you finish a feeding, giving the caffeine time to leave your system before your next feeding.

Fish

We all know that eating fish has many health benefits. It is one of the healthiest sources of animal protein and omega-3 fatty acids. But it can also contain mercury and a contaminant called a neurotoxin that can affect the baby's brain. For this reason, we recommend that you follow the same fish and seafood consumption guidelines set out for pregnant women, in order to minimise the amount of metal stored in your body or present in your breast milk. The restriction usually applies to fatty fish caught in the North Sea, such as salmon, especially when consumed in large quantities.

Chocolate

It seems so innocent, and yet, unfortunately, it can also act as a laxative for a baby (not to mention it contains a low amount of caffeine). Pay attention to the effects of your baby's diaper after consuming chocolate. If it is significantly different than usual or your baby seems a little fussy, you may need to reduce it or eliminate it altogether until you stop breastfeeding.

Highly processed foods

A healthy diet is essential for producing nutrient-rich breast milk. Processed foods are high in unhealthy fats, calories, and added sugars. While additional research in humans is still needed, there is some concern that frequent exposure to foods high in sugar and fat as an infant may lead to unhealthy eating habits and obesity in your child.

Your baby's body will show you signs of what's working and what's not from your diet.
