Tell your gynecologist about any irregular periods, pelvic pain or discomfort, your sexual history (any STDs that may have created scar tissue), etc. This will help identify conditions that are likely to affect your future fertility.

Consider focusing on an anti-inflammatory diet

Endometriosis and PCOS are two of the leading causes of female infertility. Inflammation is involved in both, so the more you can do to reduce inflammation in your body, the better. An anti-inflammatory diet with antioxidant-rich foods has been shown to reduce inflammation without the need for medication and is a healthy choice you can make that will benefit you on multiple levels.

Continue to aim for and maintain your target weight

Everyone knows that being overweight—especially when you're in the obese range—is a precursor to conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. However, it's also sometimes a precursor to infertility. The more you can do to maintain a BMI between 19 and 25 (depending on your situation), the better.

Follow a healthy lifestyle.

This is a broad recommendation. Do you eat well? Do you exercise? Do you smoke? Do you drink? How do you manage stress? These are some of the things you need to think about when it comes to your reproductive health. Also, many conventional household cleaners and products have chemicals that negatively affect fertility. Eliminate these toxins from your environment by focusing on earth-friendly products for cleaning, health and beauty care, etc.

Don't ignore irregular periods

Irregular periods are not always normal. Sperm, however, live much longer – an average of three or more days – so having sex in the days leading up to ovulation – as well as on the day of ovulation, increases your chances of conception.

Assisted reproduction

If you are under 35 and have tried for 12 months without success, or over 35 and have tried for six months without success, it's time to discuss assisted reproduction with your gynecologist and make a plan around it.
