It is a safe way to check the health and development of the fetus. During a fetal ultrasound, the baby&#039;s heart, head, and spine are evaluated along with other organs. The test can be done either through the mother&#039;s abdomen (transabdominal) or through the vagina (transvaginal).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are different types of fetal ultrasound:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Standard ultrasound. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The test uses sound waves to create two-dimensional images on a computer screen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Doppler ultrasound. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This test shows blood flow<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the vases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Three-dimensional ultrasound. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound, a three-dimensional image of the fetus is formed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first fetal ultrasound is usually done in the first trimester to confirm pregnancy and estimate gestational age. If a problem is suspected, a follow-up ultrasound or additional imaging tests, such as an MRI, may be recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Why is an ultrasound performed?<\/b> <b>;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First trimester ultrasound is performed to assess the size and position of the fetus, to determine the number of fetuses, and to estimate gestational age. Ultrasound can also be used for first trimester genetic screening, as well as to detect abnormalities of the uterus or cervix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the second and third trimesters, many features of pregnancy, including fetal anatomy and fetal development, are monitored by ultrasound. A detailed anatomical study of the fetus is performed on the second-level ultrasound between weeks 20 and 24.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a suggested gestational age of 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 22nd week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the second and third trimesters, further ultrasound evaluation may be needed to assess fetal development and estimate amniotic fluid volume. A specialized or detailed examination is done when an abnormality is suspected based on your history or other prenatal test results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Dangers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic ultrasound has been used during pregnancy for many years and is generally considered safe. The lowest amount of ultrasound energy that provides an accurate assessment should be used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fetal ultrasound also has limitations. It cannot detect all genetic abnormalities \u2013 or it may falsely suggest that a genetic defect is present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on your baby&#039;s position and stage of development, you may be able to make out a face, hands and fingers, or even feet. Don&#039;t worry if you can&#039;t &quot;see&quot; your baby.
