Depending on the reason for the surgery, it may also include the removal of other organs and tissues, such as the ovaries and\/or fallopian tubes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are different types of hysterectomy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total Hysterectomy, in which the entire uterus is removed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subtotal Hysterectomy in which only the body of the uterus is removed and the cervix remains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a total hysterectomy, the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, and both ovaries are removed along with the appendages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radical Hysterectomy, in which the entire uterus and parametria are removed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Why is a hysterectomy performed?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hysterectomy may be needed in cases such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavy or unusual bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uterine prolapse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">precancerous lesions of the cervix, endometrium<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abnormal vaginal bleeding that is not controlled by other treatment methods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe endometriosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uterine fibroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adenomyosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic pelvic pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uterine prolapse which can lead to urinary incontinence or difficulty in bowel movements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer of the uterus, ovaries, or endometrium<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Are there alternatives to hysterectomy?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. Hysterectomy is only one way to treat problems that affect the uterus. For some conditions, however, hysterectomy may be the best option.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>How will I feel after the hysterectomy?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a hysterectomy, your periods will stop. Occasionally, you may feel bloated and have symptoms similar to a period. It is normal to have light vaginal bleeding for about four to six weeks after surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your ovaries were removed with your uterus before menopause, you may experience symptoms that often occur with menopause, such as hot flashes, which may be treated with: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormone replacement therapy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADDITIONAL DETAILS<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Does hysterectomy affect sexual function?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A woman&#039;s sexual function is usually not affected after a hysterectomy, and her sexual desire is not changed. Only if the ovaries were removed with the uterus before menopause, may a decreased sex drive occur and vaginal dryness be a problem during intercourse.
