What is hysteroscopy?<\/span><\/p>\n

OR <\/span>hysteroscopy<\/b> It is a minimally invasive method used to diagnose and treat gynecological conditions related to the uterus.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hysteroscopy is performed using a hysteroscope, a specialized medical instrument with a built-in camera and light source. With this instrument, the doctor examines the endometrium and, if any abnormal findings are detected, removes them using special scissors or forceps.<\/span><\/p>\n

It lasts about 30 minutes and is generally a painless examination.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why might I need a hysteroscopy?<\/span><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Some of the reasons why you may need a hysteroscopy are:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • abnormal Pap test results<\/span><\/li>\n
  • abnormal uterine bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n
  • bleeding during menopause<\/span><\/li>\n
  • diagnosing the cause of infertility or recurrent miscarriages<\/span><\/li>\n
  • endometrial polyp removal<\/span><\/li>\n
  • removal of fibroids that protrude into the endometrial cavity (submucosal fibroids)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • taking an endometrial biopsy<\/span><\/li>\n
  • removal of intrauterine devices (IVDs)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    You cannot have a hysteroscopy if you are pregnant.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What are the risks of hysteroscopy?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Complications from hysteroscopy are rare. Some that have been reported are:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Contamination<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Pelvic inflammatory disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      What happens after hysteroscopy?<\/span><\/h2>\n

       <\/p>\n

      In the immediate period, you may experience symptoms similar to mild menstrual cramps. Return to daily activities is almost immediate, while abstinence from sexual intercourse for at least 1 week is recommended. In the event of symptoms such as fever, vaginal discharge or heavy vaginal bleeding, immediate contact with the Gynecologist is required.  <\/span><\/p>\n
