BREASTFEEDING: TIPS FOR NEW MOTHERS

THE breastfeeding is the natural way of feeding an infant and is recommended as the ideal method for meeting his nutritional needs in the first months of life. Breast milk is rich in nutrients, antibodies and growth factors that cannot be completely replaced by any substitute.

BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING

  • For the baby: Strengthens the immune system, reduces the risk of infections, allergies and chronic diseases. It also contributes to proper brain development and the balance of the microbiome (intestinal flora) of the intestine.
  • For the mother: Helps the body recover faster after childbirth, reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, while strengthening the emotional bond with the infant.

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL BREASTFEEDING

  1. Get started immediately: The first contact with the baby and breastfeeding within the first hour after birth help to better establish lactation.
  2. Frequent meals: Newborns need to breastfeed every 2-3 hours, even at night, to ensure adequate milk production.
  3. Correct breastfeeding position: Proper positioning of the baby at the breast reduces pain and prevents nipple injuries.
  4. Patience and consistency: There may be difficulties at first, but with practice, guidance from experts, and composure, the process becomes easier.
  5. Hydration and nutrition of the mother: The mother needs adequate fluid intake and a balanced diet to support milk production.
  6. Avoiding unnecessary supplements: Using foreign milk without medical guidance can negatively affect breast milk production.
  7. Support from the environment: Partner and family support plays a crucial role in the success of breastfeeding.

FREQUENT DIFFICULTIES

  • Nipple pain: Usually due to the baby being positioned incorrectly at the breast.
  • Feeling of insufficient milk: A common concern, but most of the time milk is sufficient if the baby is breastfeeding frequently and developing properly.
  • Mastitis: Inflammation of thebreast which is treated with rest, frequent breastfeeding and medical guidance.

CONCLUSION

Breastfeeding is the most natural and beneficial choice for the baby and the mother. Persistence, proper information and guidance from health professionals can help every mother overcome the initial difficulties and enjoy this unique life experience.
