OVARIAN CYST: WHEN IS IT HARMLESS AND WHEN IS SURGERY NEEDED?

Ovarian cysts are common in women of reproductive age and, in most cases, are harmless and disappear without treatment. However, there are cases where medical intervention or even surgical removal may be necessary.

WHEN IS A CYST HARMLESS?

The functional cysts They form during the menstrual cycle and are a result of normal hormonal changes. Usually:

  • They do not cause symptoms.
  • They disappear automatically within a few cycles.
  • They are detected incidentally on a gynecological ultrasound.

Also, the corpus luteum cysts that appear after ovulation are usually absorbed by the body without requiring treatment.

WHEN DOES A CYST NEED MEDICAL FOLLOW-UP?

Some cysts may cause symptoms such as:

  • Pelvic pain or discomfort.
  • Pressure on the bladder or bowel.
  • Cycle disturbances.

In these cases, the gynecologist monitors the progression of the cyst with regular ultrasounds and may recommend conservative treatment, such as birth control pills to prevent new cysts.

WHEN IS SURGERY NEEDED?

Removal of an ovarian cyst may be necessary if:

  • It has a large size. (usually over 5-7 cm.).
  • Does not subside after a few months of monitoring.
  • There is a risk of rupture or torsion of the ovary.
  • Causes severe pain and symptoms.
  • Looks suspicious on ultrasound and requires biopsy for further evaluation.

Surgical methods include: laparoscopic cyst removal (minimally invasive) or, in rare cases, more extensive removal of the ovary if there is a serious risk of malignancy.

CONCLUSION
