WOMEN'S HEALTH: SET GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Healthcare is important but, unfortunately, often overlooked. Those who enjoy good health tend to visit the doctor only when something is wrong. The new year is an ideal opportunity to focus on our health, setting goals that we can maintain throughout the year. There are many aspects of women's health that can be addressed with regular visits. From questions about periods and menopause, to the importance of fiber, bone density, and exercise, your lifestyle and collaboration with your gynecologist can make a difference. Here are some health goals for 2024 for a happier and healthier self.

Schedule your annual exam

Regular checkups are an important part of preventive healthcare. Many conditions can be detected early during an annual exam. Many of us are at risk for certain diseases without realizing it. Whether due to genetic predisposition or lifestyle choices, an annual checkup can check for warning signs or abnormalities and underlying conditions. An annual exam should include:

  • Transgenital ultrasound examination
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) Assessment
  • Bone density check
  • Blood glucose level indication
  • Breast examination
  • Pap test, if needed

Do regular breast exams.

Women should have regular breast exams during their annual check-ups. During this check-up, your gynecologist should show you how to do regular self-exams. After age 40, women should also discuss the option of annual mammograms. Talk to your gynecologist about your breast health and decide when is the right time to start screening. Depending on your family history, it may be recommended to start earlier.

Exercise regularly.

It's never too late to start exercising or add more hours of activity to your day. Daily physical activity has multiple benefits, from a lower risk of heart disease to weight loss and improved mental health. The average person spends about 10 hours a day sitting. A sedentary lifestyle can shorten life expectancy, contribute to weight gain and worsen depression. Exercise doesn't have to be difficult. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise every day. Whether it's walking your dog after work or taking a fitness class, add some activity to your routine. Weekends are especially a great time to get moving. Don't forget: Classes are not just a place for physical activity, they are also great social opportunities.

Practice mindful eating

We all turn to food from time to time due to emotional fluctuations, but many of us forget to eat intuitively and exercise portion control when we're caught up in our daily lives. If you tend to eat in front of the TV or while scrolling on your phone, your brain is less likely to register what you've eaten. Intuitive eating means tuning into your body's natural cues and needs. The next time you feel the urge to grab some chips or a chocolate bar, ask yourself if you're really hungry or just bored. Sometimes, we crave sugar and other processed foods when our blood sugar is low. Intuitive eating can help us curb our junk food habits and nourish ourselves with healthy alternatives. You can talk to your healthcare professional for more information.

Prioritize self-care

Do you spend a lot of time taking care of others, but do you need to take care of yourself regularly? Health and wellness are all parts of self-care, but there’s more to it than that. Self-care is anything that feels good for your body, mind, and spirit. Whether it’s turning off your phone at a certain time and reading a good book, making your favorite beverage, or watching your favorite movie, it’s important to understand that taking care of yourself is worth it.
