The last few weeks leading up to labor aren't exactly a smooth ride. Sleepless nights, back pain, constant trips to the bathroom, and more can all be annoying. During this time, you'll feel all kinds of aches and pains, and sometimes it's hard to tell if they're part of your pregnancy or a sign of labor. Signs and symptoms vary for every mom-to-be, with some starting to experience them a month before labor, while others start just hours before giving birth.
Watch out for these signs and symptoms that indicate your baby is coming:
You are either extremely tired or full of energy.
In the weeks or days leading up to labor, you may feel especially tired. Between the heaviness, exhaustion, and overactive bladder, it can be hard to get a good night’s sleep. Some may feel like they want to stay in bed all day, while others experience the opposite – a burst of energy! There’s a need to clean and organize the house to make sure everything is ready before your baby arrives. This is the need to create a nest.
The baby is “coming down”
Your baby is descending into your pelvis, getting into position to make his exit. This is a sign that labor will begin soon, and you will find yourself making even more trips to the bathroom to pee. At least you will be able to breathe easier as your little one moves away from your diaphragm!
You have diarrhea.
Many pregnant women experience diarrhea at various stages of their pregnancy, but in the short time before labor, it returns! This is because in preparation for labor, your uterine muscles begin to relax, as do other muscles in your body, including those in your rectum. Don't forget to stay well hydrated.
Your vaginal discharge changes color and consistency
When your baby is ready to come, your vaginal discharge will become pink and thicker. You may also see your mucus plug – the thick plug of mucus that seals the opening of your cervix from bacteria.
You feel stronger contractions
During the third trimester, you will often feel Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions). It is often difficult to tell if what you are feeling is real labor contractions. If you are getting closer to your due date and feel the contractions getting stronger and more frequent, this may mean that you are in labor or that you will give birth very soon.
Watch out for these signs and symptoms that indicate you are about to give birth. There is no need to panic when you spot any of these. Always remember that you have prepared as best you can. Take a deep breath, arm yourself with courage and get ready for the wonderful journey that awaits you! No matter how many difficulties you face, remember that soon you will be holding your new baby in your arms.
